Why Water Treatment Matters More in the Algarve Than Almost Anywhere Else

The Algarve's mains water supply contains dissolved calcium at concentrations that rank among the highest in Europe. Every appliance, fitting and pipe in your property is affected — and untreated hard water is the single most preventable cause of plumbing failure across the region.

Water Heater Element Failure

Limescale deposits on electric heating elements insulate them, forcing higher operating temperatures and dramatically shortening their life. An element that should last fifteen years fails within two to three in hard water without treatment.

Shower Valve Cartridge Seizure

Thermostatic shower valve cartridges fill with limescale, causing them to stiffen, lose temperature control and eventually seize entirely. Budget cartridges can fail within two Algarve summers in high-occupancy rental use.

Washing Machine and Dishwasher Damage

Limescale accumulates on heating elements in washing machines and dishwashers, reducing efficiency and eventually causing element failure. Machines in Algarve hard water areas have significantly shorter lifespans than the same models in soft water regions.

Bathroom Fitting Staining

Limescale deposits on taps, shower screens, shower heads and toilet bowls require constant cleaning in hard water areas. In luxury bathroom installations at Quinta do Lago or Vale do Lobo, scale staining on high-specification fittings is both unsightly and difficult to remove without risk of surface damage.

Pipe Narrowing Over Time

In copper pipework, limescale gradually builds up on the internal bore — less dramatically than in galvanised steel, but measurably. In combi boiler primary circuits (Faro and Portimão properties), limescale on the heat exchanger is a significant boiler performance and longevity issue.

The right filtration system depends on whether you're on mains or borehole supply, what you're trying to achieve, and the size and usage pattern of your property. We assess each property individually before recommending anything.

Whole-House Filtration System

Mains Water

A resin-based filtration system that reduces the scale-forming minerals responsible for limescale, delivering treated water to every outlet in the property. Fitted at the point of entry to the property, it protects every appliance, fitting, pipe and water heater simultaneously.

Requires periodic salt top-up (the resin regenerates itself) and a bypass for the outdoor garden supply. We fit whole-house filtration systems across the Algarve and set up a service reminder for the annual resin check and salt supply.

Best for: Villas and larger properties where protecting multiple bathrooms, appliances and a water heater simultaneously justifies the investment. Payback typically within two to three years in extended appliance and fitting life.

Scale Inhibitor (TAC System)

Mains Water

Template Assisted Crystallisation (TAC) systems don't remove calcium from the water — they alter the structure of calcium crystals so that they pass through the system without depositing as scale. No salt, no electricity, no drainage connection required. Significantly lower installation cost than a resin-based filtration system and no ongoing salt purchase.

The trade-off: TAC systems prevent new scale formation and gradually reduce existing scale deposits, but they don't produce the "slippery" treated-water feel of a salt-based filtration system. They are also less effective in very high hardness water. For Algarve properties with moderate hard water issues where the primary concern is appliance protection, they are a practical and low-maintenance option.

Best for: Apartments, smaller properties, and situations where appliance protection is the primary goal and the lower maintenance of a salt-free system is preferred.

Reverse Osmosis — Drinking Water

Mains & Borehole

A point-of-use reverse osmosis system installed under the kitchen sink produces near-pure drinking water — removing virtually all dissolved minerals, bacteria, nitrates, pesticides and any other contaminants present in the supply. Produces a dedicated drinking water tap at the sink for bottled-water quality from the tap.

Reverse osmosis is the appropriate drinking water solution for both mains-connected properties where the occupants want to eliminate bottled water consumption, and for borehole-supply properties where the water chemistry makes the untreated supply unsuitable for drinking. RO systems require an annual membrane and filter cartridge replacement.

Best for: Any property where drinking water quality is a concern — either due to mains taste/quality or uncertain borehole water chemistry. Eliminates bottled water purchase entirely for a household.

Iron and Manganese Removal

Borehole Water

Elevated iron in borehole water causes an orange-brown staining on sanitary ware, laundry, dishwasher interiors and kitchen surfaces. Manganese causes a black or dark brown staining. Both are common in Algarve borehole water from certain geological formations — particularly in the calcareous interior areas of the Loulé and Tavira municipalities.

Iron removal is achieved through oxidation filtration — either air injection (oxygen oxidises dissolved iron to solid particles which are then filtered) or chemical oxidation using permanganate-based media. The appropriate treatment depends on the iron concentration, pH and other water chemistry parameters from the borehole test. We carry out water testing and specify the correct treatment approach for each borehole.

Best for: Rural borehole properties where orange staining on basins and toilet bowls, or black staining on surfaces, indicates elevated iron or manganese in the supply.

UV Sterilisation

Borehole Water

Ultraviolet sterilisation kills bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms in the water supply without adding any chemicals — the water passes through a UV lamp chamber and any biological contamination is neutralised. Essential for any borehole supply where bacterial contamination is possible or confirmed, and for any property where the borehole casing condition or well head protection is uncertain.

UV sterilisation is installed as a final treatment stage after filtration — the water must be clear and relatively low in iron before reaching the UV lamp, as turbidity and colour reduce the UV penetration and effectiveness. It requires an annual lamp replacement to maintain effectiveness. We install UV sterilisation as part of a complete borehole treatment train where needed.

Best for: All borehole-supply properties as a minimum final stage. Essential where bacterial contamination is confirmed or where the borehole is close to agricultural land or septic systems.

Sediment and Carbon Filtration

Mains & Borehole

Sediment pre-filters remove particulate matter — sand, silt, rust particles — from the supply before it reaches other treatment stages or appliances. Essential as the first stage of any borehole treatment train, and useful on mains supplies where the distribution system introduces rust particles from ageing infrastructure. Carbon filters remove chlorine taste and odour from mains water and organic compounds from borehole supplies.

Sediment filters also protect irrigation solenoid valves and drip emitters on borehole-fed garden irrigation systems — without filtration, particulate matter blocks emitters and damages solenoid valve diaphragms within a season. We specify sediment filtration on all borehole irrigation systems as standard.

Best for: Every borehole system as a pre-treatment stage. Also useful as a standalone solution on mains supplies where taste, odour or rust particles are the specific concern.

Borehole Properties

Borehole Water Testing and Treatment Across the Algarve Interior

Rural properties in the Loulé and Tavira serra on private borehole supply cannot assume their water is safe and suitable for all uses without testing. Here are the contaminants most commonly found in Algarve borehole water and the treatment each requires.

Iron

Orange-brown staining on basins, toilets, laundry and kitchen surfaces. Common in inland Algarve boreholes from ferrous geological formations.

Treatment: Air injection iron filter or chemical oxidation filter

Manganese

Black or dark brown staining on sanitary ware and surfaces. Often accompanies elevated iron in the same borehole.

Treatment: Greensand or catalytic carbon filter after oxidation

Hardness (Calcium)

Limescale accumulation on appliances and fittings. Present in most Algarve boreholes from calcareous limestone aquifer geology.

Treatment: Whole-house filtration system or TAC scale inhibitor

Nitrates

Agricultural contamination from fertiliser use above the aquifer. A health concern, particularly for infants. Odourless and tasteless — not detectable without testing.

Treatment: Reverse osmosis (point of use for drinking) or ion exchange nitrate filter

Bacteria (E. coli / Coliforms)

Contamination from surface ingress, nearby septic systems or agricultural runoff. Health risk. Can only be confirmed by laboratory analysis.

Treatment: UV sterilisation after sediment filtration

Low pH (Acidic Water)

Acidic borehole water is corrosive to copper pipework and fittings, causing verdigris staining and shortened pipe life.

Treatment: Calcite contact filter or pH correction dosing

Water Filtration Algarve — FAQ

Everything Algarve property owners need to know about whole-house filtration, borehole treatment and drinking water filtration.

The Algarve's mains water supply consistently measures between 250 and 400mg/l calcium carbonate hardness depending on the specific supply zone — classifying as "very hard" to "extremely hard" on the standard European scale. Soft water is typically below 100mg/l. The practical consequence is that limescale accumulates on every heating surface and fitting the water contacts significantly faster than in low-hardness areas. The costs of untreated hard water — in appliance replacements, shower valve cartridges, water heater elements and general fitting lifespan — significantly exceed the cost of a filtration system over the property lifetime.
A resin-based whole-house filtration system removes calcium and magnesium from the water, replacing them with sodium, and produces treated water with no scale formation and a noticeably different feel — significantly gentler on skin and hair. A TAC scale inhibitor doesn't remove the calcium but changes its crystal structure so it passes through the system without depositing. Scale inhibitors require no salt or electricity and are lower maintenance, but don't produce the same treated-water feel and are less effective in very high hardness. For most Algarve rental villas and larger properties, a resin-based filtration system is the better long-term investment; for apartments and smaller properties, a TAC inhibitor is a practical alternative.
Possibly — but you should test it before assuming it is. Algarve borehole water varies enormously between locations. Some boreholes produce excellent, clean water; others contain elevated iron, manganese, nitrates from agricultural contamination, or in the worst cases bacterial contamination that poses a direct health risk. The only way to know is a laboratory water test. We co-ordinate borehole water testing and specify a treatment system based on the actual results — which may be as simple as a sediment filter and UV steriliser, or as comprehensive as iron removal, filtration, and reverse osmosis for drinking water.
Orange-brown staining is almost certainly elevated iron in the borehole water — dissolved ferrous iron that oxidises on contact with air and surfaces, depositing as rust-coloured ferric oxide. It's extremely common in Algarve boreholes from certain geological zones. The treatment is an iron removal filter — either air injection oxidation for moderate iron levels, or chemical oxidation for higher concentrations. We confirm the iron level with a water test before specifying the treatment, as the correct approach varies significantly with the iron concentration and the water's pH.
A resin-based whole-house filtration system replaces calcium with sodium, which some people notice in the taste of treated water — particularly those on low-sodium diets, for whom this isn't recommended as a drinking water source. The standard installation includes a bypass at the kitchen drinking tap so the cooking and drinking water remains unfiltered by the sodium exchange. For a comprehensive solution, we install a reverse osmosis system under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water, leaving the whole-house filtration system to protect appliances and fittings — the combination is the most complete approach to water quality across the Algarve.
The resin in a whole-house filtration system regenerates itself automatically using brine from the salt reservoir — you just need to keep the salt topped up, which is typically every four to eight weeks depending on usage. The resin itself needs inspection every three to five years and occasional replacement when it loses capacity. We offer annual service visits for all filtration systems we install — checking resin condition, salt usage, regeneration settings and hardness output — and notify you when a visit is due.
