in the Algarve

The most common mistake in Algarve bathroom installations — whether carried out by the owner, a contractor or a Portuguese plumber who hasn't thought about it — is specifying fittings and valves that are adequate for soft water but will fail rapidly in the Algarve's hard water environment. The Algarve's water supply contains dissolved calcium at concentrations that are among the highest in Europe. Limescale accumulates on every surface the water contacts — inside valve cartridges, on tap seats, around shower head nozzles and inside thermostatic valves. A budget thermostatic shower valve that might last ten years in Scotland can seize up, crack its cartridge or scale beyond adjustment within two or three Algarve summers, particularly in a holiday rental property with high usage.

This is not a reason to spend dramatically more on fittings — it is a reason to specify the right fittings for the environment. The key considerations are cartridge quality (ceramic disc cartridges resist limescale far better than rubber washer types), valve body material (brass bodies with appropriate plating last significantly longer than zinc alloy in hard water), thermostatic valve specification (hard-water-rated cartridges are widely available and cost meaningfully less than a valve replacement after two seasons), and shower head design (individual nozzle anti-lime designs that flex to release scale are the standard specification for the Algarve). We advise on fitting specification as part of every bathroom installation we carry out — not to upsell premium products, but to ensure that what we install will still be working correctly in five years.

The Algarve's renovation market — the historic townhouses of Tavira and Olhão, the fishing village cottages of Ferragudo, the traditional properties of Alte and Salir — creates bathroom installation challenges that don't exist in a standard modern villa. Solid stone walls with no cavities require supply and waste pipes to be chased into the masonry or surface-mounted with appropriate boxing. Floor levels may not have a void beneath them, requiring creative waste routing. Heritage-listed properties in classified historic centres may have constraints on what can be done to the external fabric. And the scale of the renovation itself — bathrooms being created where none previously existed, or completely reconfigured from a layout that dates back decades — means the plumbing needs to be planned into the wider renovation programme from the outset.

A specific consideration for Algarve renovation bathrooms: the water heater. Many older Algarve properties have a single shared water heater serving the whole property — an arrangement that may have been adequate for the original one or two bathroom layout but fails completely for a renovated three or four bathroom villa.
